San Diego has always been a city with a passion for fitness, sports and outdoor recreation, so it's no wonder that communities like Carmel Valley are even encouraging their youngest residents to get on board! On January 25th Carmel Del Mar Elementary School hosted the 2nd annual Carmel Valley 5K and Fun Run, and this year's race proved to be even more popular than last year. Hundreds of local parents and children participated in the event that raised important funds for the Del Mar Schools Education Foundation and its mission to support critical programs like Science, Music, Art, Technology and Physical Education.
A competitive 5K race kicked off the day followed by a non-competitive (though you'd have a hard time saying that after seeing some of the kids effort) Fun Run. From elite athletes to the moms pushing babies in strollers the day was a huge success and another sign of the great community spirit that Carmel Valley is known for.
The fun also didn't stop with the last participant crossing the finish line -- the event wrapped up with plenty of food, music and activities for everyone. Food trucks on site kept tummies full, while bounce houses, face painting and live bands kept the kids entertained throughout the morning.
There's no question that the Carmel Valley 5K and Fun Run has quickly become a local favorite and my kids are already talking about "training" for next year's race!
